The Versailles Area Genealogical and Historical Society, located in Maple Park, Illinois, is a treasure trove of history and heritage. Versailles itself is the oldest settlement in Brown County, founded in 1824 by Cornelius VanDeventer. A Glimpse into Versailles’ Rich Past

Versailles was named by Lucinda Peters Casteen after their prior home in Versailles, Kentucky. This friendly village of approximately 500 residents has a history that dates back more than 175 years. Early settlers were welcomed by the indigenous Kickapoo, Sacs, Fox, and Miami tribes. Notably, Thomas Ford, Illinois’ 8th governor, wrote his “History of Illinois” in 1840 while living here. The Duryea family, known for inventing the horse-less carriage, also called Versailles home. Additionally, Abraham Lincoln visited the area on several occasions and has relatives still residing there.

Mission and Offerings of the Society

The Versailles Area Genealogical and Historical Society is committed to preserving the history of the local area. With more than 250 members across the United States, the society plays a crucial role in historical research and education. The society operates a large research library and museum, complemented by a historic park featuring a log cabin and a blacksmith shop.

Volunteers and donations staff the society, allowing it to publish quarterly newsletters and assist school students with research projects. One notable program is the First Settler Certificate, which is available for qualifying descendants. Membership is open to all, with annual fees set at $14 for individuals, $15 for members and spouses, and only $5 for students under 18. For those looking to commit long-term, lifetime memberships are available for $125 for individuals and $150 for couples.
