Our History
The museum’s journey began in 1933, moving locations twice before settling at its current site, Canonchet Farm, in 1985. This historic farm was once the estate of former governor William Sprague IV, whose mansion was sadly lost to a fire in the early 20th century. Today, the museum occupies an eight-acre campus that features several buildings, including the Metz exhibit hall, carpentry barn, blacksmith’s forge, fiber shed, print shop, and carriage barn.
Visiting the Museum
While visiting hours for the 2024 season are now closed, the South County Museum continues to offer winter craft workshops. The museum invites group tours and field trips, accommodating requests for scheduling tours outside regular hours. Be sure to check their calendar for special event openings.
