Discover the Historical Society of Whitehall: A Treasure Trove of Local History
The Historical Society of Whitehall, located in Whitehall, New York, is a vital repository for the region’s historical artifacts. Established in 1911, the Society preserves a rich collection of items that reflect the cultural and social fabric of the community. This museum is not just a place for artifacts; it is a living center for education and genealogy, welcoming both locals and visitors alike.
Preserving Artifacts and History
The Society collects and maintains a variety of artifacts. Among the preserved items, you can find books, photographs, scrapbooks, textiles, church records, cemetery records, and newspapers. These materials are crucial for research and for anyone interested in the history of Whitehall and its surroundings. Many items suitable for public display, such as tools, glassware, pottery, and machinery, are housed in the museum, enriching the visitor experience.
Community Involvement
Volunteerism plays a significant role in the Society’s operations. The activities of the Historical Society of Whitehall are driven by the dedication of local volunteers. They embrace donations and bequests of historical significance, which help in the preservation of the past. Community involvement is highly encouraged. Whether as a member, volunteer, or simply a visitor to the museum or research library, your participation helps in keeping the local history alive.
Milestones and Achievements
After years of inactivity, the Historical Society was reactivated in 1951 and opened its museum in 1959. This launch coincided with the bicentennial celebration of Whitehall. The museum is housed in an unused canal terminal built in 1917. Thanks to a long-term lease with the State of New York and continuous support from the local community, the museum has thrived as a historical landmark. It is open from June to October, allowing visitors to explore the birthplace of the U.S. Navy.
The Research Center
In the 1980s, the Historical Society initiated a Research Center on the second floor of the Isaac Griswold Library. This center houses thousands of photographs, papers, as well as birth, death, and marriage records. It serves as a valuable resource for individuals researching their ancestry. The Research Center is open every Tuesday morning from 9 AM to noon, weather permitting, with volunteers available to assist visitors.
