Middlesex Heritage Group: A Glimpse into History

Welcome to the Middlesex Heritage Group, a museum located in the charming Town of Middlesex, New York. This museum serves as a testament to the town’s rich history and cultural heritage. It showcases artifacts and exhibits that highlight the stories of the community and its early settlers.

About the Town of Middlesex

Middlesex is steeped in history, with its origins tracing back to a Seneca tribe legend that speaks of a village known as Nundawao near Canandaigua Lake. The first European settlers arrived around 1789, and by 1796, the town was officially formed. Initially named “Augusta,” the town changed its name to Middlesex in 1808 to avoid confusion with another location. The formation of Yates County in 1823 brought Middlesex into a new administrative region. As time progressed, parts of Middlesex contributed to the formation of neighboring towns, such as the Town of Potter in 1832.

The Museum’s Mission

The Middlesex Heritage Group aims to preserve the local history and heritage, providing an engaging place for both residents and visitors. Through various exhibits, the museum creates an educational environment that fosters appreciation for Middlesex’s historical significance. The museum organizes events and activities throughout the year to promote community involvement and local history awareness.

Current Events and Community Initiatives

Aside from showcasing historical artifacts, the museum also plays a vital role in community initiatives. For instance, the Town of Middlesex has organized a Clean Up Day scheduled for August 10th at 8:00 am. This is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of the town, reflecting the community’s pride in their environment.
