Soo Visual Arts Center: A Hub for Emerging Artists in Minneapolis
The Soo Visual Arts Center, affectionately known as SooVAC, serves as a dynamic museum located in Minneapolis, United States. Since its inception in 2001, the center has been dedicated to showcasing the work of under-represented artists, focusing primarily on emerging talent from Minnesota. With a mission to support local artists, SooVAC actively contributes to the thriving arts community in the region.
Exhibitions and Programming
SooVAC has exhibited over 2,500 artists since opening its doors, positioning itself as a leader in discovering new talent. The current exhibition, “Transformed,” features the work of artist Fawzia Khan, who explores spirituality and moral frameworks around human interactions. This exhibition, which opens on November 24 and runs until January 5, 2025, highlights the importance of community and understanding through art.
In “Transformed,” Khan presents a series of loom-woven Jainamaaz (prayer rugs) that are inspired by her Muslim upbringing. The rugs not only showcase her artistry but also reflect her current humanist outlook. The artist has woven audio recordings of her voice reciting poetry and wisdom into each piece, allowing viewers to experience her words in a profound way. The curated colors of the rugs are carefully chosen, reflecting the meanings behind each reading.
Upcoming Events
An opening reception for the “Transformed” exhibition is scheduled for Saturday, November 23, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Additionally, on December 14, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, Fawzia Khan will engage in conversation with Nicole Watson, the Director of The Catherine G. Murphy Gallery. Events like these promote discussion and further enrich the community’s connection to the artistic process.

As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, SooVAC relies on the support of the community to continue its vital programming. People interested in contributing to the local art scene can get involved by attending exhibitions, joining mailing lists, and following the museum on social media.
