The lighthouse features a rubblestone tower that stands 25 feet high, complemented by a stone dwelling that measures 20 by 34 feet.

Captain James Shaw West was appointed as the first keeper of the lighthouse when it entered service on October 5, 1817. He moved into the lighthouse with his wife, Charlotte, and their nine children. Tragically, their family faced loss, as one of their children had previously passed away. While living at the lighthouse, Charlotte and James welcomed two more children.

Significance of the Lighthouse

Lieutenant Edward W. Carpender visited the lighthouse in 1838 and commended Keeper West’s exceptional care. In a detailed report, he praised the light’s condition, noting that it stood 60 feet above sea level and was equipped with 10 lamps featuring 13 ½ and 15-inch reflectors. He highlighted the light’s efficiency, stating that even six lamps would suffice, denoting the keeper’s diligent maintenance work.

However, Carpender also warned of the encroaching sea, suggesting that the lighthouse might need relocation. Over two decades, 127 vessels had gone aground near the lighthouse, underscoring its critical role in aiding navigation.
