The Western Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable (WPACWRT) serves as a dedicated museum and educational institution focused on the American Civil War. Located in Pittsburgh, this non-profit organization promotes the study and appreciation of this pivotal period in American history. The only requirement for membership is a genuine interest in the Civil War, making it accessible for a diverse range of history enthusiasts.

Monthly Meetings and Educational Programs

The WPACWRT meets on the third Wednesday of every month, with the exception of January and July. In January, no meeting is held, while July features a picnic at North Park. The regular meetings take place at Edgeworth Elementary School in Edgeworth, PA, except during June and August when they are hosted at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ambridge. Each meeting begins at 7:30 PM and is free and open to the public, allowing attendees of all ages to engage with Civil War topics.

Each month, the Roundtable invites a guest speaker who offers insights into various aspects of the Civil War. Topics often cover battles, personalities, and lesser-known stories from the era. Past speakers have included prominent historians such as Dr. James Robertson and Pulitzer Prize winner Mark Neeley, enriching the experience for attendees.

Field Trips and Volunteer Opportunities

One of the highlights of membership is access to an annual field trip to a Civil War battlefield, guided by Ed Bearss, the historian emeritus for the National Parks. In addition to the major field trip, members engage in shorter trips, volunteer projects aimed at battlefield preservation, and annual picnics, fostering a sense of community among Civil War enthusiasts.

Membership in the WPACWRT is affordable, with family membership available for just $25 per year. This membership includes a monthly newsletter titled “Stray Shots” and priority access to all the trips and events. Members range from scholarly writers to those simply eager to learn more about the Civil War.
