Nisei Baseball Research Project: A Tribute to Japanese American Baseball

The Nisei Baseball Research Project (NBRP), located in Fresno, California, is a museum dedicated to celebrating the legacy of Japanese American baseball. Exhibition Highlights

The NBRP’s exhibition commemorates the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 and the 150th anniversary of US-Japan baseball diplomacy. This exhibit features historical panels and prewar artifacts that chronicle the journey of baseball from its introduction to Japan in the early 1870s to the first Japanese American teams formed in 1903. In addition, it highlights the early tours of Nikkei teams to Asia starting in 1914, which paved the way for professional baseball in Japan in 1936.

A Memorable Moment in Baseball History

Among the treasures of the NBRP is rare 1927 film footage capturing a historic game in Fresno. The film showcases an extraordinary match where Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig played alongside Japanese American baseball all-stars. This footage is significant as it is the only on-field 16mm recording taken during an eight-city tour. On that day, the Nisei team triumphed over Babe Ruth’s squad with a score of 13-3. The reel was acquired and digitized through the spirit of Gail Zenimura Dunn, highlighting the importance of preserving this unique piece of history.
