Bannister Gallery: A Vibrant Arts Space in Providence
Bannister Gallery, located in Rhode Island College’s Roberts Hall, is a dynamic museum that aims to celebrate the diverse art forms of local, regional, and international artists. Since its dedication in November 1978 in honor of Edward Mitchell Bannister, a notable nineteenth-century Black artist, the gallery has been a crucial part of the Providence art scene.
Exhibitions and Programming
Each year, Bannister Gallery hosts 7 to 8 exhibitions, showcasing a wide range of artistic expressions. These exhibitions feature traditional media such as painting and sculpture, alongside contemporary formats like photography, graphic design, and digital media. The selection of exhibitions is managed by the Bannister Gallery Committee, which consists of the Gallery Director and members from the Art Department Faculty.
Each exhibition typically runs for three to four weeks and often includes public lectures or programs related to the showcased artists. This approach not only enriches the viewer’s experience but also fosters a strong connection between the artists and the audience. Visitors can explore thought-provoking installations and engage in meaningful conversations surrounding the artwork.
Current Exhibit: Richard Whitten’s Objects of Wonder
Currently on view from November 7 through December 6, the exhibition features the works of Richard Whitten, a Professor of Art at Rhode Island College.
