Exploring the Mini World of Trains in Greenville, United States
The Mini World of Trains, located in Greenville, SC, has long captivated both local residents and visitors alike with its intricate displays and fascinating history. Although the original non-profit organization closed its doors in 2015, the passion for model trains has continued to thrive in a new, personal layout dedicated to the Denver, Front Range, and Rocky Mountain Railroad.
A Journey Through History
The backstory of the Mini World of Trains reveals a rich tapestry of dedication and creativity. The original museum showcased a variety of model train setups but faced challenges in securing funding and a new location after its lease expired. This led the founder to shift gears and focus on a personal project that has been in development since 2010. Initially envisioning an N Scale version of Germany, the creator transitioned to a HO Scale portrayal of American railroads, particularly emphasizing the scenic beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
Pursuing a Lifelong Passion
Model trains have been a lifelong passion for the founder since receiving a Lionel train set during childhood. Despite veering off course during his teens, this hobby was reignited in 1984 with a thoughtful gift from his wife—a Bachmann N Scale starter set. Although space constraints limited the ability to create a substantial layout initially, this was merely a stepping stone in his journey of model railroading.
After moving to Houston in 2005, he experienced the joy of building a train display in a dedicated space. However, issues such as a dirty garage prompted a new approach. Over the years, the designs and layouts evolved, but the love for modeling trains remained strong.
Current Endeavors
Today, the Mini World of Trains serves as a testament to perseverance and passion. Nestled in a 1,200 square-foot room above a detached garage/workshop, this current layout captures the essence of scenic railroads in the United States. The new display reflects years of hard work and dedication, drawing inspiration from vast landscapes and historical elements familiar to those who love the Rocky Mountain region.
While the museum’s website is currently under construction, the promise of more information in the near future is exciting. There is a rich narrative to share about the evolution of the Mini World of Trains. For enthusiasts and newcomers alike, this miniature wonder in Greenville continues to be a beacon of creativity and imagination within the world of model railroading.
