Becket Land Trust and Historic: Preserving Nature and Community in Becket, MA

The Becket Land Trust and Historic is a remarkable institution dedicated to protecting, preserving, and conserving the unique rural character of Becket, Massachusetts. For over 25 years, the Trust has played an essential role in safeguarding the natural resources and ecologically sensitive areas of the region. Visitors to the museum and surrounding properties can appreciate the beauty of nature while learning about the vital conservation efforts that keep these spaces intact.

A Brief History

Established in 2001, the Becket Land Trust purchased the Becket Quarry and Forest, a significant 300+ acre parcel of primarily wooded land, as a result of an extraordinary community fundraising campaign. The local citizens rallied together, donating funds to prevent the industrial development of the area. This effort reflects the community’s dedication to preserving their natural environment for the recreational enjoyment of future generations.

Management and Collaboration

In recent years, managing the Quarry has become increasingly challenging for the all-volunteer Trust. To address these demands, the Trustees of Reservations, an organization with 130 years of experience in conservation, has agreed to take ownership of the Quarry. This collaboration allows for improved management of the property while ensuring public access remains a priority.

Recreational Opportunities

The Becket Land Trust and Historic are committed to maintaining and enhancing recreational areas. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, bird-watching, and exploring the beauty of the historic Quarry and Forest. A parking fee of $10 per car per day supports the ongoing management and maintenance of these pristine lands.
