Discovering the Berlin Historical Society: A Journey Through Local History
The Berlin Historical Society, located at the Museum of Local History, is a treasure trove dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of Berlin, Wisconsin. Nestled in a historic two-story brick building, which was constructed in 1888, the museum serves as a tribute to the people, businesses, and industries that have shaped this vibrant community since its founding in 1848.
Explore the Museum’s Unique Features
Visitors to the museum can experience living history through various exhibits. One notable feature is the Berlin Bottling Works building, a former carriage house and garage that houses intriguing artifacts from the region’s past. Among its captivating displays are ice harvesting tools from the era of iceboxes and early print shop equipment that illustrates how printing was done, by setting pages one letter at a time.
A Historic Education at Clark School
Another significant part of the Berlin Historical Society is the Clark School, built in the mid-1860s on a farm in Waushara County. This one-room schoolhouse began accepting students in September 1866. However, by the early 1960s, many of these small rural schools were closing, with students transferring to larger school systems. Clark School stands as a reminder of the educational traditions of the past.
