Visiting TechWorks!

While the main audience is older teens and adults, families are welcome to bring younger children, encouraging a shared learning experience.

Exhibits and Attractions

One of the highlights of TechWorks! is the Vintage IBM Computing Center. Here, visitors can discover mid-20th century IBM mainframes, such as the IBM 1401 and IBM 1440. The museum not only showcases these classic systems but also offers demonstrations, allowing guests to operate some machines themselves. Attendees can even print 1960s-style selfies and banners, making the experience both educational and interactive.

Aviation and Space Exploration

TechWorks! also delves into Aviation and Space Exploration. The region has produced notable astronauts, including Dan Bursch, Eileen Collins, Doug Hurley, and Doug Wheelock. Interestingly, these astronauts would represent half an astronaut if evenly recruited across the U.S. Visitors can learn how NASA crews and ground teams trained in Full Mission Simulators, which were built by GP-Link right in Binghamton.

Gaming Innovation

The museum highlights IBM Gaming Chips, which were designed by IBM Endicott. These chips are integral to many classic video game systems and provided the foundation for early high-end graphic designs. At TechWorks!, guests can play classic games on original consoles and even learn to code their video games using Unity software.

A Fond Tribute

In memory of the late comedian Bob Newhart, visitors are encouraged to enjoy a video sketch in which he humorously interacts with Herman Hollerith. This sketch showcases the historical significance of the punch card, adding a light-hearted touch to the museum experience.
