Who Was Hermann (Arminius)?

Hermann, historically known as Arminius, was a chieftain of the Cherusci tribe who played a pivotal role in protecting the territories of Germania in the early first century AD. He is celebrated for his strategic brilliance, notably orchestrating a monumental victory against Roman forces. In September of 9 AD, Hermann led an alliance of various Germanic tribes to ambush and defeat three legions of Rome under Publius Quinctilius Varus. This remarkable battle took place in the Teutoburg Forest, shifting the course of Roman expansion and altering Tiberius Caesar’s foreign policy.

Despite the subsequent retaliatory campaigns by Roman legions, Hermann and his allies continued to resist occupation. The frustration and costs of continued warfare ultimately led Rome to withdraw from Germania in 17 AD. Tragically, Hermann’s life ended in betrayal, as internal strife among the tribes resulted in his assassination.

The Hermann Monument itself was dedicated on September 26, 1897, by Governor David Marston Clough.
