A Brief History of La Verne

The city of La Verne was established in 1887 under the name Lordsburg, named after its founder, promoter I.W. Lord. It was incorporated in 1906, and in 1917, the name was officially changed to La Verne. The city earned its title as the “Heart of the Orange Empire” due to the extensive orange groves that flourished in the area. Unfortunately, a citrus disease and post-World War II housing developments led to the decline of these groves.

In response to the worrying loss of historical context, the City Council established a Cultural Heritage Commission in 1969. The chairperson, Rose Palomares, was instrumental in seeking solutions to preserve La Verne’s rich history, which ultimately led to the founding of the Historical Society.
