Discover the Ohio Glass Museum: A Haven for Glass Enthusiasts
Located in historic downtown Lancaster, the Ohio Glass Museum offers a unique experience for art and history lovers. Home to an impressive collection of glass artifacts, the museum is dedicated to showcasing the craftsmanship and artistry of glass production. Recently, it has announced the opening of a stunning new exhibit titled DAZZLING!, featuring a major collection of glass candle holders. This exhibit is set to open to the public on September 12th.
A Major Collection Unveiled
The upcoming exhibit DAZZLING! will display the breathtaking collection amassed over nearly 50 years by collectors Al Schon and Roger Bridgewater from St. Louis, Missouri. The couple has generously donated nearly all 583 pieces of their collection to the Ohio Glass Museum. This extensive assortment of glass candle holders represents one of the museum’s largest contributions to date.
The Journey of a Passionate Collection
The story of this remarkable collection began in 1977, when Schon and Bridgewater acquired their first pieces—a pair of New Martinsville “Man in the Moon” candlesticks. Over the decades, they focused on collecting American glass from various manufacturers. As their passion grew, they realized the need to find a suitable home for their extensive collection. After exploring various options, they discovered the Ohio Glass Museum, which stood out due to its commitment to preserving glass art, particularly that from the Ohio Valley glass houses.
A Focus on Craftsmanship
Curated by OGM Art Director Anne Kiphen, the DAZZLING! exhibit emphasizes the artistic talent of original designers. The clarity of the crystal pieces allows visitors to appreciate the graceful lines and the intricate craftsmanship involved in their creation. Kiphen expressed her delight in receiving the Bridgewater-Schon collection, highlighting its significance to the museum’s ongoing mission of celebrating glass artistry.
