Pūlama iā Kona Heritage Preservation Council: Preserving the Heart of Historic Kona
The Pūlama iā Kona Heritage Preservation Council is a vital institution located in Ho‘okena, United States. The council’s mission is to preserve, protect, and enhance the unique qualities of historic Kona. With a focus on maintaining the area’s cultural heritage, the council engages in various programs designed to save Kona stories for future generations.
Saving Kona Stories Initiative
One of the council’s most significant projects underway is the “Saving Kona Stories” initiative. Unfortunately, the original Pūlama signs suffered damage due to harmful UV rays. However, a promising plan is in place. By 2025, the council aims to refurbish and redesign these signs so they can withstand environmental challenges and last for many years. Additionally, this initiative includes making valuable historical information available online.
In June 2024, the Pūlama iā Kona Heritage Preservation Council received a $20,000 Wai Wai grant from Hawai’i County to support this important project. This grant will help create an online repository that will host records and oral histories. This repository will not only restore Holualoa’s historic building signs but also provide easy access to the community, school teachers, students, and scholars alike.
Community Involvement and Support
The council recognizes that achieving its ambitious goals requires community involvement. To meet grant requirements in 2024, Pūlama must raise an additional $5,000 in matching funds. Individuals interested in supporting this vision are encouraged to donate or get involved by volunteering. Their participation will significantly contribute to preserving the area’s rich cultural heritage.
As stated by Craig Potts, Executive Director of the Kentucky Heritage Council and State Historic Preservation Officer, “Historic preservation does much more than preserve bricks and mortar. It connects us with our past and revitalizes our communities.” This principle is at the core of Pūlama iā Kona’s endeavors.
