Discovering History at the San Juan County Historical Society Museum
The San Juan County Historical Society (SJCHS) Museum, established in 1964, serves as a vital institution dedicated to preserving the rich history of San Juan County, Colorado. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, the SJCHS highlights the importance of the mining heritage that has shaped the county’s development over the decades.
Mining Heritage: The Core of San Juan County
Mining has been the heart of San Juan County’s growth. The region’s development thrived thanks to the mining of precious metals, such as those extracted from numerous local mines, mills, and smelters. Furthermore, supportive service industries, including transportation through the railroad and Otto Mears’ toll road system, played pivotal roles in the mining sector’s success. These industries not only provided essential supplies but also helped create housing, entertainment, and cultural opportunities for the community.
Historic Landmarks and Notable Properties
The SJCHS is proud to oversee several noteworthy sites in the area. The Town of Silverton, along with the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Mayflower Mill, has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Among its many properties, the Historical Society owns the Old Hundred Boarding House, which is listed on Colorado’s Historic Places, and the Silverton Northern Engine House, which houses the iconic 315 narrow gauge steam locomotive. Other significant properties include the famed Casey Jones caboose and the Silverton Power Station.
