Exploring the Arizona Folklore Preserve: A Tribute to Cowboy Culture
Located in the picturesque Huachuca Mountains near Hereford, Arizona, the Arizona Folklore Preserve is a unique museum dedicated to preserving the cowboy way through music and folklore. Founded by Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer, this enchanting site serves as a haven for those who cherish the rich storytelling tradition and history of the American West.
A Dream Realized by Dolan Ellis
The story behind the Arizona Folklore Preserve is one of passion and dedication. Dolan Ellis envisioned a space that would celebrate Arizona’s vibrant culture, filled with songs and stories that highlight the region’s heritage. Initially, he considered establishing the center in Fountain Hills near Phoenix. However, a trip to southeastern Arizona in 1990 changed everything. Dolan and his former wife, Rose, were captivated by the beauty and historical significance of the Huachuca Mountains, prompting them to purchase 15 acres in Ramsey Canyon for their dream project.
The Legacy of Arizona’s Official State Balladeer
For over 55 years, Dolan Ellis has proudly held the title of Arizona’s Official State Balladeer, a designation established by Governor Sam Goddard in 1966. This honor came shortly after Dolan left the renowned musical group, The New Christy Minstrels. Since then, he has dedicated his life to capturing the essence of Arizona through music, photography, and storytelling. The Arizona Folklore Preserve showcases his commitment to the preservation of cultural narratives, making it a vital institution in the state.
