Navarro-by-the-Sea Center: Preserving History in Mendocino
The Navarro-by-the-Sea Center (NSCR) is a dedicated all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Mendocino, California. This small but impactful museum aims to preserve and educate the public about the rich history of the original town of Navarro, which once thrived at the mouth of the Navarro River. Although the town has long since disappeared, NSCR focuses on saving its remaining historic structures, particularly Captain Fletcher’s Inn and the Mill Superintendent’s House.
A Glimpse into History
Captain Fletcher’s Inn, established around 1865, is one of the key landmarks that survived the numerous floods, fires, and earthquakes that beset the area. It remained in the Fletcher family until 1926, when the property transitioned to become a road house under various private owners. By the mid-1980s, however, the Inn fell into severe disrepair and ultimately closed its doors for good.
In 1996, both Captain Fletcher’s Inn and the Mill Superintendent’s House, built around 1864, were acquired by the State and integrated into Navarro River Redwoods State Park. The NSCR was formed in 2001 to partner with State Parks in the restoration efforts. Unfortunately, funding constraints hindered extensive repairs. By 2010, the Inn was in critical danger of collapse.
Efforts and Achievements
Thanks to major financial support from organizations such as the California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE), Mendocino County, and private donors, the NSCR has made considerable progress in stabilizing the historic Inn. The organization has navigated a complex permitting process that lasted over ten years, which is a testament to their dedication and commitment to cultural preservation.
Significantly, NSCR has secured National Register nominations for both the Inn and the Mill House. They also prepared architectural drawings aimed at stabilizing these historic structures. This revitalization effort has laid the groundwork for public education, interpretation, and research, ensuring that the stories of Navarro’s past continue to be told.
A Community Effort
The Navarro-by-the-Sea Center embodies the spirit of community engagement and historical preservation. As the organization pushes forward, ongoing support and donations are essential to complete the restoration process. The vision is clear: to reopen and share these treasured historical sites with future generations. Join the NSCR in their noble cause to save Navarro’s rich history!
