Welcome to the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, a treasure trove of history located in the heart of Santa Clarita, California. Situated within the picturesque William S. Hart Park in Newhall, this historical society is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich culture and history of the Santa Clarita Valley. With nearly 50 years of commitment to historical preservation, the society remains an essential resource for both residents and visitors alike.
Our Mission
The mission of the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society is straightforward yet profound: to preserve and share the culture and history of the Santa Clarita Valley. The society aims to create a deeper understanding of the area’s past while providing a platform for community engagement and education. With ongoing projects and plans for future exhibitions, the society actively works to connect people with their historical roots.
Explore the History Center
The Santa Clarita History Center is home to several historic buildings, which include a steam engine and caboose located adjacent to the 1888 Saugus Train Station. The society is actively engaged in restoring these priceless structures. These buildings have stood the test of time, with most in place for over 30 years. The current restoration efforts aim to provide visitors with tangible connections to both the community and the broader historical narrative of the valley.
What’s New in History
Exciting developments are on the horizon at the museum. In 2025, a new exhibition will open within the Saugus Train Station. This exhibit will be an immersive experience showcasing the valley’s rich rail history, from the Chinese laborers who helped build the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1870s to the modern Metrolink trains. Each facet of rail development will highlight the significance of this transportation evolution in shaping Santa Clarita.
Additionally, plans for a new Santa Clarita History Museum in the Pardee House are underway. This museum will feature rotating exhibits, offering insights into the valley’s history from its earliest settlers to contemporary events. These carefully curated exhibits will ensure that the colorful heritage of Santa Clarita remains accessible and engaging for everyone.
Support and Contributions
The Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society thrives on community support and contributions. Many programs rely heavily on donations that help maintain and expand the museum’s offerings. Visitors are encouraged to stroll through the campus, appreciating the architectural beauty of the buildings and the historic outdoor exhibits.
