The Hapeville Historical Society, located in Atlanta, United States, is a vibrant community hub dedicated to preserving local history. The society’s story began during the Bicentennial in 1976 when several individuals recognized the need for a dedicated place to collect and share local history.

The Foundation of the Society

In the years leading up to its formation, significant efforts were made by dedicated members of the community. Miriam Hudson interviewed longtime Hapeville residents, recording oral histories that would help document personal stories and experiences. Meanwhile, Ed Milton sought out photographs and information from local citizens to preserve the town’s early history. These individual efforts culminated in the desire to create a formal organization.

Organizational Meetings and Growth

On November 3, 1980, a pre-organizational meeting was held in the Hapeville Council Chambers. The turnout exceeded expectations, with 45 individuals expressing interest in forming a historical society. During this meeting, membership fees and classifications were discussed, and temporary officers were elected. This initial gathering laid the groundwork for a more structured organization.

On January 15, 1981, the society held its formal organizational meeting, which attracted around 75 attendees. The group approved bylaws and elected key officers, including Ed Milton as President and Miriam Hudson as Vice-President. The inclusion of a legal member, Bob McCord, ensured that the society obtained necessary state incorporation papers and non-profit status.

The Depot Museum and Community Engagement

By summer 1981, the city provided the Historical Society with office space in the west freight room of the Depot. This crucial partnership allowed for the creation of the Depot Museum. In April 1982, the Depot Restoration Committee merged with the Historical Society, pooling resources and knowledge to cultivate a comprehensive historical experience for the community.

Within its first two years, the Hapeville Historical Society saw remarkable growth, boasting over 300 members and 35 corporate supporters. This flourishing society has become a cornerstone of Hapeville, fostering a sense of community and preserving the town’s history for future generations.
