Discover the Brookfield Historical Society Museum
Welcome to the Brookfield Historical Society Museum, a vital hub for understanding the rich history of Brookfield, Connecticut. Established in 1968, this museum stands as the sole organization dedicated to preserving the town’s history. With over 220 years of evolving stories, the museum invites you to journey into our past and explore the fascinating heritage of this friendly community.
A Brief History of Brookfield
The roots of Brookfield trace back to May 1788 when the Connecticut General Assembly designated the Parish of Newbury. This designation arose from land gifted by neighboring towns: Newtown, New Milford, and Danbury in 1752. The parish eventually attained town status and was renamed Brookfield in honor of Reverend Thomas Brooks, a beloved Congregational pastor.
The Purpose of the Brookfield Historical Society
The primary mission of the Brookfield Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and share significant facts and artifacts from Brookfield’s past. The Society believes that these elements are essential to forming the town’s permanent heritage. By documenting the history of Brookfield, they ensure that both residents and visitors have access to educational and engaging insights into the community’s journey.
Modern Outreach and Online Presence
In May 2001, the Brookfield Museum and Historical Society embraced technology by launching an online platform. This initiative aims to reach out to friends, neighbors, and history enthusiasts. The Society playfully imagines that this technological advancement is something the town’s founding fathers would have envisioned for future generations.
