A Brief History of Brookfield

The roots of Brookfield trace back to May 1788 when the Connecticut General Assembly designated the Parish of Newbury. This designation arose from land gifted by neighboring towns: Newtown, New Milford, and Danbury in 1752. The parish eventually attained town status and was renamed Brookfield in honor of Reverend Thomas Brooks, a beloved Congregational pastor.

The Purpose of the Brookfield Historical Society

The primary mission of the Brookfield Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and share significant facts and artifacts from Brookfield’s past. The Society believes that these elements are essential to forming the town’s permanent heritage.
