Forest Grove School Preservation is an essential museum located in Bettendorf, Iowa. This unique institution is dedicated to restoring and preserving Forest Grove Schoolhouse No. 5, which served the educational needs of children for nearly 85 years. This one-room schoolhouse is a living testament to rural education and local history.
The Historical Significance of Forest Grove School
Forest Grove School was established in 1873 after the formation of Pleasant Valley subdistrict No. 5. According to the 1882 History of Scott County, the total cost for construction and furnishings was $1,500. The school enrolled about 30 students annually, ranging in age from 5 to 14. Remarkably, children would often travel from within a two-mile radius, carrying books acquired from nearby Princeton. Their curriculum included essential subjects like math, reading, writing, spelling, geography, history, and English.
Memories of the School Experience
Forest Grove School remained operational until its closure in 1957. Delbert Blunk, who attended this school as a boy, later purchased the building. He recalled the joyful moments spent playing outdoor games during recess, such as sledding in winter and the popular giant stride. This nostalgic perspective highlights the enriching experiences that shaped the lives of many students.
Restoration Efforts
The Forest Grove School Preservation was established in 2012, with a mission to breathe new life into the historic schoolhouse. Among the key figures supporting this project was Cedar Rapids architect Doug Steinmetz, who served as a consultant. The restoration process began with the construction of a new concrete block foundation in 2012.
Significantly, in 2014, a new furnace and a cedar shake roof were installed. Work on the wooden siding was also conducted, ensuring that it was either replaced or maintained. Eight replica replacement windows were added to preserve the building’s historical authenticity. Furthermore, a custom front door was crafted by Carver Custom Millworks in Milan, Illinois. A non-functional chimney, created from salvaged bricks, was installed on the north side, enhancing the building’s 1920s aesthetic.
