The Nelson family raised six children and even welcomed a pair of Civil War veteran mules to their homestead. In 1958, after the passing of Daniel and Margaret’s grandchildren, Roy and Lillian, the farm transitioned into a historical site. Since 1964, the Mahaska County Historical Society has honored the legacy of rural pioneer men and women through engaging exhibits and storytelling.
