Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art: A Cultural Gem in Hays, United States
Located in Hays, United States, the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art serves as a vital cultural hub for the community and the students of Fort Hays State University (FHSU). This gallery proudly showcases a diverse range of artworks, including student exhibits, faculty shows, and traveling exhibitions throughout the year.
A Vision Realized
The Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art has its roots in a vision presented by John C. Thorns, Jr. in 1969. For many years, the Art and Design Programs at FHSU were spread across several buildings without a formal exhibition space. Thorns aimed to create a regional art museum that would also function as an educational laboratory for the Department of Art. His dream materialized with the completion of Rarick Hall in the spring of 1981, marking a significant milestone for the university.
From Visual Arts Center to Moss-Thorns Gallery
Initially named the Visual Arts Center Gallery upon its opening, the venue was rededicated as the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art on October 11, 1987, during the annual homecoming festivities. The gallery honors notable figures in the department’s history, specifically Joel C. Moss and John C. Thorns, Jr., who made substantial contributions to the art community at FHSU.
