As the first parading Krewe in modern times in Shreveport and Bossier City, the Krewe of Gemini is a nonprofit volunteer organization comprised of individuals from all walks of life. Their primary mission is to promote the festive atmosphere of Mardi Gras throughout Louisiana.
History of the Krewe
The Krewe of Gemini has deep roots in the historical and cultural tapestry of Mardi Gras celebrations. Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, takes place the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. The Carnival Season officially commences on the Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated on January 6. This day honors the visit of the Three Kings to the Christ Child. During this season, the popular King Cake is introduced, a delicious pastry decorated in Mardi Gras colors. Traditionally, a tiny plastic doll is hidden inside the cake, and the person who finds it is responsible for hosting the next gathering.
Religious Significance of Mardi Gras
The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced back to European traditions. The New Orleans version has a particular connection to French customs. On Mardi Gras in 1699, French explorer Iberville camped near the mouth of the Mississippi River and named it “Point Mardi Gras.” After the settlement of New Orleans in 1718, elements of the French Carnival were adapted. Despite initial flourishing festivities, Spanish rule imposed bans on masked balls and private celebrations, affecting the early Mardi Gras culture.
The Parade and Events
The Krewe of Gemini hosts parades and events that captivate the community and visitors alike. Each year, they bring together crowds to experience the thrill and excitement of the festivities. The Krewe provides a platform for local artists, musicians, and performers to showcase their talents during the events. These parades are a highlight of the annual Carnival season, showcasing themed floats, vibrant costumes, and the joyous spirit inherent in Mardi Gras celebrations.
