Sagadahoc Preservation: A Beacon of Historic Preservation in Bath, Maine
Located in the heart of Bath, United States, Sagadahoc Preservation, Inc. (SPI) is a dedicated organization devoted to preserving the architectural heritage of the region. Founded in 1971, SPI began its mission to save the Winter Street Congregational Church building from destruction. This commitment to preservation has expanded to include multiple initiatives and programs that celebrate Bath’s rich history.
The Historic Winter Street Center
One of the organization’s highlights is the Winter Street Church, built in 1843 by Anthony Coombs Raymond. This magnificent structure is an outstanding example of American Gothic Revival architecture in New England. Now known as the Winter Street Center, it serves as the headquarters for SPI and houses various community programs aimed at preserving the area’s history.
Annual Events and Programs
Sagadahoc Preservation hosts several annual events that engage the community and honor local efforts toward preservation. The 2024 Annual Meeting will be held on October 17, where SPI will welcome new trustees and recognize outstanding preservation efforts. In particular, two Bath couples will be recognized for their significant contributions—one for restoring a residential home and another for adapting a historical building for modern use.
Another eagerly awaited event is the 2025 House & Garden Tour, which will showcase Bath’s South End. This area is home to one of Bath’s lesser-known Historic Districts. Tickets for the tour will be available soon, providing a great opportunity for attendees to admire the architectural beauty of the neighborhood.
Concert Series: Supporting Restoration
This December, on the 19th at 7 PM, SPI will host a concert featuring performers Kat Logan and Lauren Crosby as part of the “Maine Singer-Songwriter” series. Attending this acoustic concert not only promises a delightful evening but also benefits the ongoing restoration of the Winter Street Church.

Sagadahoc Preservation invites community members to become involved, whether through membership or participation in public programs. With a mission to maintain Bath’s historical integrity, SPI actively works to celebrate and safeguard the architectural heritage that makes Bath, known as the City of Ships, a unique and historical gem in Maine.
