Reconnect With Nature
Visitors to the Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary can enjoy a tranquil escape into nature. The interconnected trails meander through forest streams and lush fern-lined slopes. This environment preserves critical wildlife habitats and supports numerous native Maine plant and animal species. It also serves as a vital stopping point for migrating birds during spring and fall. The sanctuary is an ideal location for birdwatching and hiking throughout the year.
Meet Our Avian Ambassadors
One of the highlights of the Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary is the opportunity to meet the non-releasable native owls, hawks, and vultures that call this sanctuary home. Each bird has its own unique personality and story. By learning about their roles in Maine’s ecosystems, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation. Educational programs, available onsite and through traveling exhibits, can help you understand how to support birds and wildlife in your community and beyond.
Immerse Yourself in History
The sanctuary is not just about wildlife; it is also steeped in historical significance. Visitors can explore the Victorian Homestead of Cordelia J. Stanwood, a pioneering woman scientist and photographer. Built by her sea-faring father, this homestead offers insight into the past and showcases Cordelia’s stunning glass-plate photography. Although the Homestead is closed for the winter, it will reopen in the spring for visitors to explore its rich history.
Discover Our Collections
The Nature Center features a variety of exhibits showcasing the art and biology of Maine birds. While the center and store are currently closed for the winter, it is worth checking back in the spring for updates on reopening. In the meantime, feel free to enjoy the tranquil trails. Shopping at the Nature Center also provides an opportunity to support the sanctuary; all merchandise sales directly benefit the resident avian ambassadors.
Support Birdsacre
Visitors are encouraged to support the sanctuary by learning, donating, or participating in educational programs. Although certain areas are temporarily closed to ensure a peaceful environment for the ambassador owls, there are still ample opportunities to connect with nature. Remember to return to visit the owls when the Bird’s Part of the Sanctuary reopens. Your support helps in maintaining the sanctuary’s mission to educate and protect Maine’s wildlife.
