Explore the Lincoln County Historical Association Museum in Wiscasset
The Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) Museum, located in Wiscasset, Maine, offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of Lincoln County. Founded in 1954 by the renowned local artist Mildred Burrage, LCHA dedicates itself to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the area’s historical artifacts. The museum encompasses three historic buildings, each with unique stories to tell: the 1761 Pownalborough Court House in Dresden, the 1811 Old Jail in Wiscasset, and the 1754 Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta.
A Culinary Treasure: The Frugal Housewife
One of the museum’s standout exhibits includes an original copy of “The Frugal Housewife,” a pre-revolutionary cookbook authored by Susannah Carter. This cookbook has a remarkable history, having been purchased by Major Samuel Goodwin on August 28, 1772, for his daughter Abigail. Its provenance is unbroken, passing through generations until it became part of the LCHA collection in 1954. Adding to its allure, the cookbook features two pages of engravings by Paul Revere, illustrating how to prepare poultry and small game for roasting.
As part of their mission to celebrate this culinary artifact, the LCHA is now offering facsimiles of “The Frugal Housewife” for sale, both online and at the Pownalborough Court House. This provides a wonderful opportunity for history enthusiasts and culinary aficionados alike to own a piece of pre-revolutionary history.
The Historic Museums of LCHA

Each location showcases a variety of collections, including textiles, costumes, tools, furniture, baskets, and housewares. These artifacts help narrate the stories of Lincoln County, highlighting themes of law and order, crime and punishment, and the everyday lives of its residents.
The Pownalborough Court House, designed by architect Gershom Flagg, has hosted notable figures such as John Adams and Benedict Arnold. This impressive structure serves as a reminder of the historical significance of the courthouse in the early days of Lincoln County.
Through the efforts of dedicated docents and archaeologists, including Tim Dinsmore, LCHA brings history to life. Interactive presentations, such as “Below Ground at the Chapman-Hall House,” draw visitors into the historical narrative of the community.
