Claude Frederick, these homes were built by local builder Jacob Saum. Mencken’s father, August Mencken Sr., a successful cigar manufacturer, purchased this newly built house for $2,900. The family moved in that same year, marking the beginning of an 84-year tenancy in the residence.

After August Mencken Jr., H.L. Mencken’s youngest sibling, passed away in 1967, the house was entrusted to the University of Maryland.
