A Glimpse into History

In 1971, the Old Schwamb Mill was officially recognized by being listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. This acknowledgment highlights the mill’s significance in American history. In 1864, Charles Schwamb acquired a two-and-a-half story wood frame industrial building at the site. This building, constructed three years earlier, had remained unoccupied. The Schwamb family expanded the mill by adding east and west wing additions in 1869 and the late 1880s, respectively.

For over a century, from 1864 to 1969, the mill operated as a family-owned picture frame manufacturing business. The transition of the mill from a working factory to a living history museum was made possible by the notable efforts of Patricia Cunningham Fitzmaurice, an early preservationist from Arlington. This transformation ensured that the rich legacy of the Schwamb Mill would be preserved for future generations.

Unique Machinery and Craftsmanship

Visitors to the Old Schwamb Mill can explore its unique 19th-century elliptical lathes and its original belt-driven shaft-and-pulley machinery. Notably, the mill still employs original hand-turning processes to create custom-made oval and circular frames for clients around the globe. Plan Your Visit

The Old Schwamb Mill is open to the public on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm, with the last tour starting at 3 pm. Group tours can be arranged daily by appointment. Admission is free, though a suggested donation of $5.00 per person is appreciated. Visitors are encouraged to capture their experience with photographs, as the mill allows for still images and videos.
