Bourne Society Historic House: A Treasure in Buzzards Bay
The Bourne Society for Historic Preservation (BSHP) operates the Bourne Society Historic House, located in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. This museum is dedicated to preserving local history and architecture. A Brief History
The history of the Bourne Society for Historic Preservation dates back to May of 1979. Citizens of Bourne rallied together to save the Briggs-McDermott House from impending demolition. Thanks to their efforts, the house was not only saved but also restored and honored on the National Register of Historic Places. The BSHP’s mission strives to protect architecturally and historically significant structures while educating the public about their importance.
The Site and its Features
The Briggs-McDermott House is located at 22 Sandwich Road in Bourne Village. On the property, visitors can also explore the Alonzo Booth Blacksmith Shop and the Alan Green Carriage House. These structures offer a glimpse into the community’s past and showcase the craftsmanship and daily life of the time.
Events for 2024
As part of its mission to engage the community, the Bourne Society will host several events throughout 2024. The Briggs-McDermott House will open for guided tours on Fridays and Saturdays, starting June 21 through August 31, from 1-4 PM. One highlighted event will be the exhibit titled “Bourne Brides,” showcasing bridal gowns and attire that span several years, reflecting the fashions and styles of their respective eras.
Additionally, the museum will feature an “Everything Blueberry” event, bringing visitors together to enjoy the outdoors and local flavors. The society is optimistic about hosting all scheduled events, although any changes will be communicated promptly.
