In 1628, the first settlers from County Kent, England, arrived in the area. They were drawn to Scituate’s natural beauty, including its cliffs and harbor, which provided security and resources.

By 1636, Scituate was officially incorporated. Over the centuries, its residents became adept at farming and fishing. They harvested a variety of marine life and cultivated crops to support their community. The town’s shipbuilding industry flourished, with over a thousand vessels crafted in its yards. Additionally, the local shoe industry played a crucial role during the Civil War, supplying soldiers with footwear.
