A Brief History of Fort Custer

Fort Custer’s history began in 1917 with the construction of Camp Custer. This site has played a crucial role in various military operations throughout the years. The initiative to create the Fort Custer Historical Society was facilitated by the Installation Commander of the Fort Custer Training Center, known then as Fort Custer. He recognized the importance of memorializing the fort’s legacy and sought approval to form a non-profit organization.

The Fort Custer Museum and Its Features

One of the key features of the museum is the original World War II enlisted barracks. This historical building was meticulously moved into the fort’s historical district, where it underwent extensive renovation. Today, it proudly reflects its original appearance from the World War II era. In addition to these barracks, the historical district comprises the last existing WWII chapel, which continues to serve the community. An enlisted recreation center from the same period is also present and is anticipated to be used for future expansion of the museum.

For those seeking knowledge, a small section of the recreation center now serves as a museum library. Visitors can explore a military armaments display, adding to the educational experience available at the museum.

Visiting the Historic Cemetery

When planning a visit, it is also worth exploring the Fort Custer National Cemetery, located just across from the training center. This cemetery is the final resting place of many soldiers who served at Fort Custer. Additionally, it contains the remains of twenty-six German Prisoners of War (POWs) who passed away during their internment. Notably, sixteen of these men died in a tragic truck/train accident while returning from a farm work detail.
