Many of these historical artifacts are at risk of falling into disrepair, with some rotting or being scrapped. The Society recognizes the importance of conserving this heritage and works tirelessly to prevent it from being lost forever.

A Legacy of Passion

The roots of the Western Michigan Society for Industrial Heritage can be traced back to the Coopersville and Marne Railway. This family-friendly, volunteer-based recreational railway realized the challenges it faced in raising funds to maintain its structures and rolling stock. In June 2000, a volunteer named Ryan J. Byle initiated a document called the Future Plans, encapsulating the aspirations of the railway team.

Tragically, on May 19, 2001, Ryan collapsed and died while assisting his father with train preparations. His passion and dedication became the driving force behind the Society’s formation. The principal members of the railway took inspiration from Ryan’s Future Plans, and in March 2001, they filed for incorporation as the Western Michigan Society for Industrial Heritage.
