Discover the Rich History at the Historic Ottawa Beach Society Museum
The Historic Ottawa Beach Society Museum, located in Holland, Michigan, is a hidden gem that provides insight into the region’s storied past. This unique museum is housed in the Pump House, the last surviving structure of the once-thriving Hotel Ottawa Complex, which dates back to 1901. Recognized as a significant contributor to the cultural and educational life of Park Township, the museum offers visitors a deep dive into local history.
A Brief History of the Pump House
The Pump House originally served as an Edison Electric Power Plant, providing essential lighting to the hotel and its grounds. After the hotel tragically burned down in 1923, the Pump House was repurposed to supply water to nearby cottages. By the 1980s, the introduction of public water made the building obsolete, leading to a period of disrepair.
In the early 2010s, the Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Department initiated a partnership with the Historic Ottawa Beach Society to restore the Pump House. This collaboration has resulted in various exhibitions and events that have both educated and entertained the public. The first major exhibit, “Icebound Found: The Ordeal of the SS Michigan,” opened in 2016 and marked a significant milestone in the museum’s revival.
Exhibits and Events
Throughout the years, the Pump House Museum has hosted multiple exhibitions, including the popular “BIG RED: From Structure to Symbol,” which debuted in June 2018. Visitors can check out the rotating exhibits that celebrate the history and culture of the area. The museum is currently closed for the season, but updates regarding future exhibits and events will be announced in Summer 2025, with operations scheduled to return from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

In summary, the Historic Ottawa Beach Society Museum is not just a place to view artifacts and exhibits; it is a community hub that plays a crucial role in preserving the local heritage. With its ongoing developments and rich history, it promises to be a valuable resource for both residents and visitors alike.
