Since its establishment in 1993, the museum has served as a vibrant cultural hub. Visitors can explore the intricate history of this remarkable site, originally home to successful entrepreneur Julian H. Sleeper.
About Julian H. Sleeper
Julian H. Sleeper (1854-1948) was a notable figure in St. Paul, known for his ventures in real estate and the theatrical arts. He began his entrepreneurial journey by running a prosperous tobacconist’s shop. His success led him to acquire the Hotel Sherman, strategically located across from the downtown railway station.
In 1884, Sleeper commissioned architect Havelock E. Hand and builder Gustav Dressel to construct his dream residence at 574 Holly. This magnificent home underwent significant expansion and remodeling during the 1893 depression, providing valuable employment for many laborers and artisans during tough economic times. In 1911, Sleeper relocated his house to 66 South St. Albans, connecting it to nearby boarding houses through a network of underground tunnels.
The Museum Collection
In 1993, Dr. Seth C. Hawkins acquired the Julian H. Sleeper House, repurposing it into a museum for his extensive collection of Gilded Age decorative arts. Formerly located in the Gowie-Normand House Museum in New Haven, Connecticut, this collection allows guests to step back in time and experience life in the 1880s.
The museum boasts nine exhibition rooms filled with distinctive furniture and decorative arts. Visitors can admire Eastlake furniture, exquisite oriental rugs, and the beautiful Bradbury and Bradbury wallpaper, all of which showcase the opulence of the era.
