Discover Maritime Heritage Minnesota: A Treasure Trove of Underwater Archaeology
Maritime Heritage Minnesota, located in Saint Paul, is a dedicated museum focused on the documentation, preservation, and conservation of the state’s maritime cultural resources. Established in July 2005 by Ann Merriman, PhD, and Christopher Olson, MA, the museum operates within a not-for-profit framework. The safety of artifacts is of paramount importance, ensuring the integrity of Minnesota’s maritime history.
A Mission Rooted in Underwater Archaeology
This unique museum specializes in underwater archaeology and maritime history. Maritime Heritage Minnesota conducts comprehensive side and down-imaging sonar surveys of lakes and rivers throughout the state. These surveys help identify human-made anomalies, including shipwrecks and other significant maritime sites.
Once anomalies are located, Maritime Heritage Minnesota employs SCUBA diving and advanced underwater archaeological techniques to document and analyze these wrecks. One of the innovative methods used includes photogrammetry, allowing for precise and detailed documentation. Historical sites are assigned Minnesota Archaeological Site Numbers upon qualifying, contributing to the state’s maritime heritage documentation.
Preserving Minnesota’s Unique Watercraft
Maritime Heritage Minnesota also focuses on creating 3D models of rare Minnesota watercraft, such as dugout canoes. This process is complemented by the digitization of historical materials, including log books, photographs, and boat brochures, making them valuable resources for maritime historical research. The museum’s efforts extend to nautical, maritime terrestrial, and dry nautical archaeology, providing a holistic view of the state’s maritime legacy.
Volunteer and Community Involvement
The museum thrives on community support, featuring a talented group of volunteers dedicated to its mission. These volunteers utilize SCUBA skills, video, and photography to assist in various projects. Their contributions are vital for the furtherance of underwater archaeology and the promotion of Minnesota’s maritime heritage.
The Only Licensed Underwater Archaeologists in Minnesota
Maritime Heritage Minnesota employs the only licensed underwater archaeologists in the state, certified by the Office of the State Archaeologist. This unique distinction places the museum at the forefront of underwater exploration and research, ensuring high standards and ethical practices in all undertakings.
For those interested in exploring Minnesota’s underwater history, Maritime Heritage Minnesota offers a window into a rich maritime culture. With a commitment to preservation and education, the museum plays a crucial role in highlighting Minnesota’s aquatic heritage.
