A Mission Rooted in Nature
The mission of the Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary is clear: to safeguard native habitats and wildlife while providing accessible opportunities for people to discover and connect with nature. This commitment is evident in the well-maintained nature trails and the various programs that engage the community. Visitors are reminded to “leave only footprints, take only memories,” emphasizing the importance of conservation.
A Rich History
The history of MLTNS is deeply intertwined with the life of Martha Lafite. Born in Liberty, Martha graduated from Liberty High School and later married Omar Thompson, who owned a greenhouse. In 1954, the couple purchased 53 acres of land that became the foundation for the Nature Sanctuary. With the assistance of Audubon members, Martha worked tirelessly to restore the property, eventually establishing the sanctuary we enjoy today.
Experiencing Nature
The sanctuary is open daily from 8 AM to 5 PM, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty surrounding them. The wildlife sanctuary and hiking trails offer a serene environment free from the distractions of urban life. However, visitors are reminded that pets are not allowed in the sanctuary to protect its wildlife.
Support the Sanctuary
As a non-profit organization, MLTNS relies on donations to maintain its operations. Visitors are encouraged to become Friends of the Sanctuary through personal donations, membership, or participating in events like the annual Summer Camp. Contributions are tax-deductible and can be made through the sanctuary’s website to help keep this precious resource open for future generations.
