Explore the Butte Archives: A Treasure Trove of History

The Butte Archives, located in Butte, Montana, serves as a pivotal institution for preserving the rich history of the city and its surroundings. Recently, significant developments have emerged for the Butte Historical Society, which operates the Archives. The Old St. James Hospital will be transformed into the new Butte Historical Society Building, marking an exciting chapter for local heritage preservation.

Celebrating History Through Writing

Each year, the Butte Historical Society conducts an essay contest honoring the legacy of Ann Cote-Smith. This contest invites participants to explore and express their ties to the region’s history through written word. The winners of the 2024 essay contest have been announced, showcasing the vibrant narratives that connect the community to its past.

The first-place winner, Kathleen Arvila-Scott, impressed the judges with her piece titled “A Finnish Boy’s Life in Butte, MT.” Her essay reflects the unique experiences of Finnish immigrants in the area. Leah Stergar secured second place with her essay, “Cornwall, England to Butte, Montana,” which highlights the journey of individuals who made their way to this mining town from across the ocean.

A Commitment to Education and Community

Paddy Dennehy, the president of the Butte Historical Society, expressed gratitude towards both the Butte Archives and the Butte Public Library for their support in organizing the contest. This collaboration is essential for not only fostering the love of history but also for supporting local authors. All essays from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 contests will be compiled into a book that will be available for free to all participants, regardless of their contest standings.

Supporting Future Endeavors

In addition to the annual contest, the Butte Historical Society has produced a 237-page book featuring selected stories from the 2019 and 2021 Essay Contests. This publication also includes an autobiography of Arthur Dubie’s experiences during World War I. Contestants can receive a free copy of this enriching book.
