Discovering the Goffstown Historical Society Museum

The Goffstown Historical Society, located in Goffstown, United States, is a treasure trove of local history. Organized on November 16, 1969, and incorporated on November 19, 1970, this museum serves as a window into the past of Goffstown and its surrounding areas. Inside, visitors can explore artifacts, documents, and exhibits that highlight the community’s historical significance.

The Origin of the Parker Building

The museum is housed in the historic Parker Building, which originally served as a general store run by William Parker in 1804. This building remained operational until Parker’s death in 1839. It was then taken over by his sons, John M. and David A. Parker, who continued the mercantile business as the J.M. and D.A. Parker Depot Store until 1872. As Goffstown West Village evolved into an essential economic, political, and social center, the brothers relocated the store to the village area.

A Hub for Community Activities

After the move, the Parker Brothers’ Store thrived on Main Street until the 1960s. During this time, the Depot Store building became more than just a place for commerce. It was repurposed for storage and provided accommodations for farm workers, drovers, and loggers. Additionally, the building hosted the Neighborly Club, a social group of women led by Mrs. John E. Parker. This club played an active role in maintaining the building through various community events, including public suppers and summer concerts, which were eagerly anticipated by locals.

A Transition to the Historical Society

As membership and funds dwindled by the mid-1960s, the Neighborly Club was unable to maintain the building. It eventually returned to the John E. Parker family. Recognizing the historical value of the structure, John E. Parker engaged with the Goffstown Historical Society to see if they would be interested in taking over the site. In 1974, the Parker Building was officially dedicated as the Goffstown Historical Society.

Since its establishment, the Goffstown Historical Society has preserved the rich heritage of the area. Visitors can immerse themselves in the stories and artifacts that shaped Goffstown’s history. The museum continues to thrive, drawing in history enthusiasts and locals alike. It stands as a vital institution that fosters a sense of community and appreciation for the past.
