The Greater Cape May Historical Society is a fascinating museum located at 653 ½ Washington Street in Cape May, New Jersey. It serves as the steward of The Colonial House, also known as the Memucan Hughes House. This historic structure dates back to around 1730 and has played a significant role in the area’s history. Originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War patriot Memucan Hughes, the Colonial House is one of the oldest surviving houses in Cape May County.

The Colonial House stands as a testament to Cape May’s rich past. It is an unsung survivor from Cape Island’s early days, illustrating the architectural and cultural heritage of the region. Since 1974, the Colonial House has also served as the headquarters of the Greater Cape May Historical Society. Visiting the Museum

The Colonial House is open to the public at no charge from June 15th to September 15th, Wednesdays through Saturdays from 1 PM to 4 PM. During this period, visitors can explore the house and learn about its significance to Cape May history. Outside of this timeframe, the Colonial House is open by appointment. It is important to note that a minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required for visits after September 15th. Admission and Donations

While admission to the Colonial House is free during the summer season, visitors coming in the off-season will be subject to a minimum admission fee of $20. This fee is based on the number of guests attending. All donations are appreciated and go directly toward the Society’s mission to collect and preserve Cape May’s rich history. As a 501c3 non-profit organization, GCMHS has been entirely volunteer-powered since 1975, ensuring a community-focused approach to historical preservation.
