Sea Girt Lighthouse: A Beacon of History in New Jersey

Welcome to the Sea Girt Lighthouse, a historic museum located at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Beacon Boulevard in Sea Girt, New Jersey. This landmark, which first illuminated the night sky on December 10, 1896, played a crucial role in guiding mariners and enhancing maritime safety along the coast. The lighthouse stands as a testament to the rich maritime heritage of New Jersey and serves as a vital educational resource for visitors.

A Historical Overview

The Sea Girt Lighthouse was constructed to fill a blind spot in the waters between the notable Navesink Lighthouse to the north and Barnegat Lighthouse to the south. It contributed to the safe navigation of countless vessels while also supporting the state’s economic growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By the early 1900s, New Jersey boasted approximately 40 light stations along its coastline, but only 11 of these original lighthouses are open to the public today, including the distinguished Sea Girt.

Architectural Significance

This striking red brick lighthouse features a 44-foot tower and is recognized as the last live-in lighthouse constructed along the Atlantic Coast. Unlike the separate tower and keeper’s house structures found at other lighthouses, the Sea Girt Lighthouse integrates its tower into the living quarters, showcasing a unique architectural design. It is equipped with a fourth-order Fresnel lens that stands 30 inches tall, also known for its multi-sided beehive shape. This remarkable lens played a pivotal role in projecting light, aiding sailors navigating treacherous waters.

Current Operations and Membership Opportunities

As part of its community engagement, the Sea Girt Lighthouse hosts an annual Holiday Party, which this year will occur on Sunday, December 8, from 4 PM to 6 PM and is open exclusively to members. It is important to note that lighthouse tours have closed for the season, with re-openings scheduled for Sunday, April 27, 2025. Visitors are encouraged to become members to enjoy special events and access to the lighthouse when it reopens.
