The Roswell Museum and Art Center is an important cultural institution located in Roswell, New Mexico. On October 19 and 20, 2024, Roswell experienced devastating flooding that reached as high as five feet in some areas. This tragic event has heavily impacted the museum’s 51,000-square-foot facility, which includes 12 gallery spaces, a planetarium, classrooms, an auditorium, and a ceramics studio. Fortunately, museum staff took immediate action following the flooding to secure key works from the permanent collection and begin assessing the damage.

Recovery Efforts and Community Support

The recovery process is expected to be extensive and may take several years. Despite the challenges, museum staff quickly coordinated with volunteers and specialists to strategize the next steps. Waide Construction volunteers helped secure the facility against potential further storm surges by installing plywood. In addition, the Conservation Center of Chicago, a disaster relief conservation laboratory, dispatched experts to assist with the assessment and stabilization of affected art and artifacts.

Community Involvement and Assistance

The response from the Roswell community has been commendable. Volunteers arrived promptly to help remove debris and mud, making the building’s exterior safer for re-entry. Additionally, state officials, including Representative Teresa Leger Fernandez, have shown support by touring the site and acknowledging the severe cultural impact of the flood. Their involvement underscores the museum’s significance to the local community.
