Kannah. It highlights the unique sapeuse subculture of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where women express their identity and resistance through fashion.

The Inspiration Behind the Exhibition

The term “sapeuse” refers to the female counterpart of the “sapeur” movement, which originated in the 1920s. The sapeurs formed their society as a sartorial response to colonial oppression in French Equatorial Africa. By wearing stylish and flamboyant clothing, they challenged colonial norms and asserted their cultural identity. This exhibition allows visitors to explore the evolution of this resistance through textile displays and vivid photography.
