Explore the Textile Heritage Museum in Burlington, North Carolina
The Textile Heritage Museum, located at 2406 Glencoe Street in Burlington, North Carolina, offers a unique glimpse into the rich history of the textile industry in the southern United States. This museum celebrates the tradition of textile manufacturing in the region, with a particular focus on the historical Glencoe Mills, which played a vital role in the local economy.
History of Glencoe Mills
Historic Glencoe is one of the best-preserved textile mill villages from the 19th century. It provides a perfect backdrop to understand the early textile communities of America. The Glencoe Mills began operations in 1882 along the scenic Haw River. This significant mill was renowned for producing plaid cotton fabrics for over 70 years, contributing substantially to the textile boom in central North Carolina. At its peak, the mill shipped products across the United States and around the globe.
A Unique Visitor Experience
Your visit to the Textile Heritage Museum begins in the former Glencoe Company Store, which also served as the administrative offices of the mill. Here, you can explore hundreds of original textile artifacts. The collection includes everything from massive machine looms to knitting and sewing machines. Additionally, you will find office equipment that was used by employees to manage orders and correspondence.
The museum also features original documents and ledgers on display, offering insights into the daily operations of the mill. A partially recreated Glencoe Company Store showcases familiar dry goods products and provides context for the shopping habits of mill workers. Furthermore, exhibits highlight some of the major textile corporations that emerged in the region, including Burlington Industries and Glen Raven Mills.
