Liberian History Education and Development Museum: A Hub of Knowledge in Greensboro

The Liberian History Education and Development Museum (LIHEDE) located in Greensboro, United States, plays a significant role in preserving and promoting the rich history and culture of Liberia. Established in April 2003, the museum was initiated by Mr. Nat Galarea Gbessagee, Mr. Siahyonkron Nyanseor, and Dr. Syrulwa Somah, along with a passionate group of friends and family. The foundation of LIHEDE was marked by a symposium focused on “African Governance, Philosophical Thought & Rule Of Law,” coinciding with the launch of Dr. Somah’s book titled “Nyanyan Gomnan: History, Migration, and Government of the Bassa.”

A Focus on African Governance

This inaugural event laid the groundwork for future explorations of leadership, governance structures, and practices within Africa. It highlighted the Bassa ethnic group, whose origins can be traced back to ancient Egypt and the Sudan, and its contributions to the cultural heritage of Liberia. Through various events and educational efforts, LIHEDE continues to delve into these themes, ensuring that vital historical lessons are not forgotten.

Addressing Contemporary Issues

LIHEDE is not just about history; it also actively works to address pressing contemporary issues faced by the Liberian population. A notable effort has been its campaign against malaria, a disease that claims the lives of approximately 21,500 Liberians each year according to the Liberian Health Ministry. By collaborating with organizations like Liberia Environmental Watch (LEW), LIHEDE has organized significant events, including national conferences aimed at combatting malaria and raising awareness about environmental challenges.

Community Engagement and Collaboration

In April 2006, LIHEDE applauded the efforts of the Chinese government for sending anti-malaria experts to Liberia. This collaboration underscored the museum’s commitment to fostering partnerships that benefit public health initiatives in Liberia. The museum not only serves as a repository of historical knowledge but also as a platform for community dialogue and development.
