The Corbitt Preservation Association Museum, located in Henderson, North Carolina, is a testament to the rich automotive history of the region. Established on November 16, 2003, the museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Corbitt trucks, which were manufactured in Henderson from 1899 to 1954. History and Founding

The journey of the Corbitt Preservation Association began with its first “Corbitt Truck Show and Reunion” in 2002. This annual event has continued on the third Saturday of October each year, celebrating the legacy of Corbitt. Interestingly, the last Corbitt truck was assembled in 1958 from spare parts and was sold to Norris Collins of the Franklin Oil Company in Franklinton, NC.

The association started with just nine charter members, and it has since grown to over 100 enthusiastic members from various states, including North Carolina, Virginia, New York, and more. The primary goals of the members include the preservation of the Corbitt name, products, property, and the establishment of a dedicated museum.

Preservation Efforts and Achievements

To achieve these goals, the association has undertaken various projects. One major initiative was the restoration of a significant 1930s advertising monument that once stood on US 1. This historical piece was relocated to the former Corbitt factory site on Parham Street in 2005, where it now stands as a reminder of the company’s legacy.

Another significant achievement was the erection of a Highway Historical Marker in 2006, which highlights the importance of Corbitt in North Carolina’s transportation history. This marker is strategically located at the intersection of Dabney Drive and the US 158 By-pass, ensuring that travelers can learn about the rich history of Corbitt trucks.

Honors and Celebrations

In 2007, Mr. R.J. Corbitt, a pivotal figure in the company’s history, was inducted into the North Carolina Transportation Hall of Fame. His accomplishments are honored with a display at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. Additionally, a 100th Anniversary celebration took place in 2010, marking a significant milestone for the Corbitt legacy.
