The Kernersville Historical Preservation Society (KHPS) stands as a vital institution dedicated to preserving the rich history of Kernersville, North Carolina. Established in 1982, this museum and preservation organization aims to safeguard the town’s historical buildings and the memories that come with them. As Kernersville rapidly developed into a commercial hub in the 1980s, many historic homes and landmarks were at risk of being lost forever.

A Legacy of Advocacy

Instrumental in the creation of KHPS was long-time resident Cornelia Adams. With her dedication and leadership, she guided the society for over a decade. Alongside Mary Ruth Korner, who is regarded as one of the town’s unofficial historians, these women significantly contributed to the documentation and preservation of Kernersville’s history. Today, their efforts continue as KHPS invites community members to participate in its mission to celebrate and protect local heritage.

Explore the Piney Grove School House

The Piney Grove School House, a charming one-room schoolhouse dating back to 1870, is a highlight of the KHPS. Located at the 4th of July Park, the school house will be open every Saturday in May 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon, weather permitting. Visitors are encouraged to step back in time and experience the educational setting of the 19th century. This opportunity provides a unique glimpse into Kernersville’s past, making it an enriching experience for families and history enthusiasts alike.

Engaging Community Events

The KHPS also hosts events aimed at increasing awareness and participation in historic preservation. One such event is “Historic Preservation 101,” guided by Michelle M. McCullough, the Historic Resources Officer for Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. This informative session will take place on May 20, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the John & Bobbie Wolfe Visitors Center at Körner’s Folly. Everyone in the community is invited to attend this engaging presentation that covers vital resources and the importance of preserving local history.

Honoring Local Veterans

In recognition of veterans buried at St. Paul’s AME Cemetery, a Wreath Laying Ceremony was held in conjunction with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) on December 12, 2021. This event represented a tribute to those who served and emphasized the society’s commitment to honoring the community’s deep roots.
